MASK is part of a new series that touches on topics of materialism, racial identity, consumerism, beauty, and gender expectations. The Korean cosmetic industry is booming globally leading to more focus on beauty and physical looks.
Korean culture is getting exposure in the western media largely due to the popularization of Korean exported culture.
This artwork challenges whether this new popularity is good attention for Asian-Americans. The media being consumed tends to be a polished version and brings unhealthy expectations.
Simultaneously, the work celebrates the positive influence and representation coming from the country’s cultural exportation.
Inspired by Art Nouveau, Ukiyo-e prints, Japonisme, Impressionsim, Pop Art, and Gothic Art.
